How this works
The tool starts from indicative monthly estimates for one person in each city — rent for a 1-bed, food, transport, utilities and leisure. Each value is a field you can change. As you edit, every city's total recalculates, the 'vs base' column shows how much you save (or overspend) against the base city, and the ranking reorders from cheapest to most expensive. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked
Where do these figures come from?
They are indicative estimates I put together for June 2026, built on public INE and Pordata data for housing and spending, cross-checked with market references (Numbeo) to capture the gaps between cities. They are not an official table — that is why every line is editable. Change any number to what you actually pay (or saw advertised) and the total recalculates instantly.
Why is Lisbon the base city?
Because it is generally the most expensive city in the country, which makes the comparison intuitive: the others almost always show a negative difference, meaning cheaper. You can switch the base in the selector — the "vs base" difference is then measured from the city you pick.
What is (and is not) included?
I included five monthly spending lines for one person: rent for a 1-bed flat in the centre, food, transport (pass), utilities (water, electricity, gas and internet) and a leisure/other line. It excludes income tax, private health, childcare, owning a car or savings. It is the running cost of living, not a full household budget.
Do these figures apply to Brazilians and other foreigners?
Yes — the cost of living does not change with nationality. What changes is your pattern: cooking at home cuts food spending; living away from the centre means lower rent but higher transport. That is what the per-line editing is for. Adjust it to your real life.
Is a 1-bed rent really around these figures?
It is the most volatile line. In Lisbon and Porto, a centre 1-bed sits around the figures shown here, but it swings a lot by neighbourhood, condition and month. Treat the number as a starting point and replace it with what you find on idealista or Imovirtual for your target area. The official sources (INE) publish medians you can use to calibrate.
DISCLAIMER
The pre-filled figures are indicative estimates for June 2026, drawn from public sources (INE, Pordata) and market references (Numbeo). They are not an official table or financial advice. Rents in particular vary widely by neighbourhood, month and property condition — always confirm against real listings (idealista, Imovirtual) and official statistics before deciding.
