How this works

To apply for Portuguese citizenship by naturalisation, the law requires you to prove A2-level knowledge of Portuguese (Law 37/81, art. 6). CIPLE, run by CAPLE at the University of Lisbon, is the best-known test — but some documents can replace it. This simulator has two parts: an exemption checker and a practice run of original A2-level questions.

  1. 1
First, check if you even need the test
For naturalisation, knowledge of Portuguese (level A2) can be proven in several ways — not only by CIPLE. A school certificate for schooling done in Portuguese, or an A2 CAPLE certificate you already hold, count as accepted proof. Part 1 walks through those routes.
  2. 2
What CIPLE and level A2 mean
CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is CAPLE’s A2-level exam, at the University of Lisbon. It tests reading, listening, writing and speaking/interaction. A2 is the "basic user": simple everyday sentences, not fluency.
  3. 3
    How the practice is scored
Part 2 has original practice questions on reading, grammar and vocabulary at A2 level. Each answer shows at once whether you got it right and why. At the end we compare your score with a 55% line — an approximation of the pass mark, for orientation only.
  4. 4
    What this is not
These questions are original and do not reproduce the official exam. Passing here does not guarantee passing CIPLE, and any decision on exemption is always the IRN / Central Registry’s, based on the documents you submit.

Frequently asked

Is this the official CIPLE exam?
No. The Part 2 questions are original, written for A2-level practice, and do not reproduce CAPLE’s official exam. They help you get used to the task types and spot weak points. The real exam is sat in a booked session, with ID, and includes a speaking component that cannot be simulated here.
Do I really need CIPLE for citizenship?
You need to prove A2-level knowledge of Portuguese, but CIPLE is only one way. The Nationality Regulation accepts, for example, a school certificate for schooling completed in Portugal (or another Portuguese-speaking country) and certificates from recognised Portuguese-language courses. If you already hold one of these, you may not need to repeat the test — confirm with the IRN.
I am Brazilian (or from another CPLP country). Am I exempt?
Being from a country where Portuguese is the official language usually helps demonstrate language knowledge, but it is not an automatic, universal waiver — it depends on the documents you submit and the review of your case. Do not rely on a "I’m exempt" you heard somewhere: always confirm with the IRN or the registry what is accepted in your specific case.
What is the minimum pass mark for CIPLE?
Passing depends on the weighted overall result across the four components (reading, listening, writing and interaction). The 55% line used here is an approximation to guide your practice, not CAPLE’s exact grading rule. For the official criteria and how each part is weighted, check CAPLE.
Where and how do I sign up for the exam?
Registration and the session calendar are run by CAPLE (University of Lisbon) and the network of exam centres, including centres abroad via Camões, I.P. Dates, fees and venues change through the year — see the CAPLE site for the nearest session and its registration deadlines.

DISCLAIMER
A guidance and practice tool, not legal advice. The Part 2 questions are original and do not reproduce CAPLE’s official exam; passing here does not guarantee passing CIPLE. Exemption routes and the real pass mark depend on the Nationality Regulation and a review of each case — the decision is always the IRN / Central Registry’s. Confirm accepted documents and exam rules with the official sources before acting.
