How this works
Regular Portuguese plates use three groups of two characters. What changed over time was the position of the letter and digit groups. This tool validates only that structure and explains which series the plate fits.
- 1
I clean the plate
You can type spaces, dashes or the plate without separators. The tool keeps only letters and digits, uppercases the letters and tries to split it into three groups of two.
- 2
I compare it with the regular legal sequences
The consolidated regulation covers AA-00-00, 00-00-AA and 00-AA-00, and Decree-Law 2/2020 added the current sequence with two letter groups and a central digit group: AA-00-AA.
- 3
I show the likely series
If the pattern matches, I show the series and the approximate legal/operational period. This helps you see whether the plate you were given looks normal for Portugal.
- 4
I flag out-of-scope cases
Diplomatic, military, temporary, export, trailer, industrial-machine and some moped plates can follow their own rules. This tool does not query IMT, IRN or any database.
Frequently asked
Does a plate that passes here really exist?
Not necessarily. This is only a format check. A plate can have the right pattern and still never have been issued, be cancelled, belong to another vehicle or be used fraudulently. To confirm a vehicle, use the Certificado de Matrícula/DUA and official channels.
What is the current Portuguese plate format?
The current regular format is AA-00-AA: two groups of two letters separated by a central group of two digits. Decree-Law 2/2020 introduced this model when the previous series ran out.
Why do older Portuguese plates have different formats?
The regulation kept several historical sequences: AA-00-00 for plates issued until 29 February 1992, 00-00-AA from 1 March 1992, then 00-AA-00, and finally AA-00-AA. Older physical plates can remain valid on vehicles in circulation.
Does the plate show the exact year of the car?
Not reliably. The format gives a broad clue about the series, but it does not replace the first-registration date on the Certificado de Matrícula/DUA. For imported cars, reading the year from the pattern can be even more misleading.
Does this accept foreign plates?
No. The tool is built for regular Portuguese plates. If you are importing a car, treat the foreign plate as an origin document and confirm the Portuguese plate assigned in the process through IMT/the DUA.
DISCLAIMER
Informational tool, not legal advice. It checks only the regular plate format and does not confirm whether the plate exists, is active, belongs to the presented vehicle, has insurance, IPO or a valid registration. Special rules may apply to diplomatic, military, temporary, export, trailer, industrial-machine and moped plates. Always confirm on the Certificado de Matrícula/DUA, with IMT, IRN or the competent authorities.
