The total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 is a partial eclipse everywhere in Portugal, peaking between 09:45 and 09:49 with 80% to 99.3% of the Sun covered. Totality, the full 100%, belongs to southern Spain, between 10:45 and 10:52 Spanish time: Cádiz, Tarifa, Málaga, Ceuta and Melilla. From the Algarve, the path of totality passes 30 km offshore.

How this works

On Monday, 2 August 2027, the Moon crosses the Sun again, and this time the path of totality runs across the Strait of Gibraltar. Mainland Portugal misses it by a little: between 80% and 99.3% of the solar disc covered, mid-morning and with the Sun high up. Here is what happens, hour by hour, and what changes compared with the 12 August 2026 eclipse.

    The Moon touches the Sun between 08:40 and 08:45
    On the mainland, first contact happens between 08:40 (Faro, Portimão) and 08:45 (Bragança). In Madeira it is 08:34 and in the Azores around 07:36, Azores local time (UTC+0). The Sun is already halfway up the eastern sky, between 20° and 25° high. For the first half hour you notice almost nothing with the naked eye, and that is exactly when people start staring: dangerous from the very first minute.

    Maximum: 09:45 to 09:49, with 80.2% to 99.3% of the Sun covered
    Unlike 2026, this time the South wins. At maximum the Moon covers 99.3% of the solar disc in Faro, 98.8% in Portimão, 97.2% in Funchal, 95.7% in Beja, 93.5% in Évora and Setúbal, 92.6% in Lisbon, 86.6% in Coimbra, 82.5% in Porto and 80.2% in Bragança. In the Algarve the light turns visibly strange and the temperature drops; in the far north it mostly looks like a weaker sunny day. Even at 99.3%, the sliver of Sun that survives still burns the retina.

    At that same instant, in Spain, night falls
    Totality in Spain (10:45 to 10:52 Spanish time) is the same moment as the maximum in Portugal: Spain runs 1 hour ahead, not 1 hour later. The shadow band crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and covers almost all of Cádiz province, part of Málaga province and the southern tip of Granada and Almería, plus Ceuta and Melilla: 115 Andalusian municipalities at 100%, according to the Junta de Andalucía. There it goes dark, stars come out and the solar corona is visible to the naked eye.

    It ends around 10:55, with the Sun 35° to 41° high
    The eclipse ends between 10:55 and 10:58 on the mainland, about 2h15 after it began. The big difference from the 12 August 2026 eclipse is the Sun’s height: in 2026 it happened almost on the horizon and you had to hunt for a clear western view; in 2027 the Sun sits 35° to 41° up. Any open-air spot works, with one trade-off: it will be an August morning, hot and without shade.

Faro tops the country at 99.3%, and the very tip of Ilha da Culatra reaches 99.5%. It still is not totality: the edge of the shadow band stays out at sea.

The map: where the shadow band runs, and how close it comes

The path of totality is 240 km wide off the Iberian coast, and its northern edge passes about 31 km south of Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. That is why the Algarve gets 99.3% and not 100%. The band comes ashore in the province of Cádiz, crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and leaves Spain past Almería, an hour after it first touched the Atlantic.

Going out to sea is a real option, not a metaphor: 35 km south of the Algarve coast the first seconds of totality appear, at 40 km a boat catches around 1 min 35 s, and at 50 km about 2 min 30 s. On land, the nearest edge of the band from Faro is the coast of Cádiz province, about 320 km away by road.

Totality in Spain, city by city

All times are Spanish time (CEST), 1 hour ahead of mainland Portugal. The duration is what decides where to go: Ceuta, Tarifa and the Strait get more than four and a half minutes, while Cádiz, Málaga and Jerez sit close to the northern edge and lose half of it. If you can choose, choose duration, not the famous name.

Cádiz and Málaga are the only two provincial capitals inside the path, joined by the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. In all, 115 Andalusian municipalities see 100%, in the provinces of Cádiz, Málaga, Granada and Almería.

The rest of Spain: what time the partial eclipse happens

Outside the band nobody is left out: the whole country sees at least 70% of the Sun covered, Canary Islands included. Spanish mainland and Balearic times are CEST; the Canaries run one hour behind, on the same clock as mainland Portugal.

Two near-misses worth naming: the city of Almería sits within a kilometre of the northern limit (99.99% on paper, a lottery decided by the Moon’s mountains and valleys), and Sanlúcar de Barrameda stops at 99.98%. In both, driving 20 km south turns a near-miss into a real, if short, totality.

Getting to totality from Portugal

It is a day trip from the Algarve and a weekend from Lisbon or Porto. Rough driving distances, with an August Monday morning and eclipse traffic on top:

  • Faro a Cádis: cerca de 320 km, 3h30 pela A22, A49 e AP-4. Cádis cidade tem 2 min 54 s; Chiclana e Conil, 20 a 30 km mais a sul, passam dos 3 min 30 s e dos 4 min.
  • Faro a Tarifa ou Algeciras: cerca de 410 km, 4 horas. É o melhor da Espanha peninsular, com mais de 4 min 30 s de totalidade, e o mais perto da linha central sem sair da Europa.
  • Lisboa a Cádis: cerca de 6 horas, 590 km. Dormir na véspera algures na província de Cádis ou de Huelva transforma uma viagem pesada numa manhã normal.
  • Ceuta, a totalidade mais longa de Espanha com 4 min 48 s, chega-se de ferry a partir de Algeciras, cerca de uma hora de travessia, e é território espanhol: basta cartão de cidadão ou passaporte, mas a travessia vai estar cheia. Reserve com antecedência.
  • A meteorologia favorece o interior e o sul. A climatologia de agosto de Jay Anderson dá cerca de 88% de dias de Sol em Cádis contra cerca de 74% junto ao Estreito, onde entra nebulosidade atlântica, e menos de 15% de nebulosidade média no interior andaluz. O vento de levante pendura uma bandeira de nuvem no Rochedo de Gibraltar.
  • Reserve camas e ferries com um ano de antecedência. A Andaluzia já está a planear para a multidão: a Junta usou o eclipse de 2026 como ensaio de trânsito e lotação para 2027, e este é o primeiro eclipse total sobre a região em mais de um século.

How to watch without hurting your eyes

One rule, no exceptions: anywhere in Portugal, on 2 August 2027, looking at the Sun requires ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses, from 08:40 to 10:58. This eclipse is in some ways more treacherous than the 2026 one: the Sun will be high and at full strength in mid-morning, so nothing about it looks or feels unusual until well past 09:15. The burn is painless and shows up hours or days later. Babies and small children should not look directly at all, even with glasses: use projection for them.

  • Serve: óculos ISO 12312-2 (verifique a marcação impressa e olhe primeiro para uma lâmpada forte); um furo de alfinete numa cartolina a projetar no chão ou numa caixa de sapatos; a sombra de um escorredor ou dos dedos entrelaçados; os crescentes projetados debaixo de uma árvore frondosa.
  • Não serve: óculos de sol (mesmo vários), vidro fumado, radiografias, CDs, o ecrã do telemóvel como espelho, nuvens como «filtro». Nenhum bloqueia a radiação que interessa.
  • As óticas multiplicam o perigo: nunca aponte binóculos, telescópio ou teleobjetiva ao Sol sem filtro solar próprio montado à frente. O telemóvel também precisa de um, colado sobre a câmara, ou é o sensor que paga.
  • Dentro da faixa espanhola, e só aí, os óculos saem durante os segundos da totalidade, desde que desaparece a última gota de Sol até ao momento em que volta. Ponha-os de volta assim que aparecer a primeira faísca.
  • Sintomas depois de observar (visão turva ou distorcida, manchas escuras, cores alteradas): ligue ao SNS 24, 808 24 24 24.
WHAT THE 2027 ECLIPSE IS NOT
  • Não é total em nenhum ponto de Portugal. Nem no Algarve, nem na Madeira, nem nos Açores.
  • Não é a repetição de 2026 nos mesmos sítios: em 2026 o eclipse mais fundo foi no extremo norte, em 2027 é no extremo sul.
  • Não é ao fim da tarde: acontece entre as 08:40 e as 10:58, antes do almoço.
  • 99% não é «quase totalidade». A 99% o céu continua azul, não há coroa solar e não há um momento seguro para olhar sem óculos.
  • Não é o eclipse anular, o «anel de fogo»: esse é o seguinte, a 26 de janeiro de 2028, e a faixa desse atravessa o sul de Portugal.

Is the eclipse of 2 August 2027 total in Portugal?
No. No part of Portuguese territory falls inside the path of totality in 2027. The national maximum is 99.3% in Faro (99.5% at the tip of Ilha da Culatra, off Cabo de Santa Maria), 98.8% in Portimão and 97.2% in Funchal. The northern limit of the path runs about 30 kilometres off the Algarve coast, out at sea. And 99.3% is not 100%: without totality there is no corona, it does not truly go dark, and there is not a single second when the glasses come off.
Where can you reach the 2027 total eclipse from Portugal?
The nearest totality is in southern Spain, and it is a day trip from the Algarve. From Faro, count on about 3h30 by car to Cádiz (roughly 320 km via the A22, A49 and AP-4) and about 4 hours to Tarifa or Algeciras, where totality runs over four and a half minutes. From Lisbon it is about 6 hours to Cádiz. If you are already in the Algarve there is also the sea option: the path begins about 35 km south of the coast, and a boat 40 km off Faro catches close to 1 min 35 s of totality.
How long does totality last in Cádiz, Málaga or Ceuta?
Ceuta gets the longest totality in Spain: 4 minutes 48 seconds, from 10:45. Then Tarifa (4 min 40 s), Melilla (4 min 34 s), Gibraltar and Algeciras (about 4 min 30 s). The city of Cádiz gets only 2 min 54 s and Málaga 1 min 48 s, because both sit near the northern limit of the path. A few kilometres change everything: from Cádiz to Chiclana de la Frontera, 25 km south, totality goes from 2 min 54 s to 3 min 31 s.
What time is the eclipse in Madrid, Barcelona or Seville?
In Madrid the eclipse starts at 09:46, peaks at 10:51 with 86.4% of the Sun covered and ends at 12:03, Spanish time. In Barcelona: 09:51, 10:59 and 12:11, with 81.7%. In Seville: 09:42, 10:48 and 12:00, with 98.4%, a few kilometres short of the band. Valencia gets 90.3%, Zaragoza 81.1%, Bilbao 74.4%. The Canaries run an hour behind: in Santa Cruz de Tenerife the maximum is at 09:34, with 79.3%. None of these cities sees totality; the table above lists the main 19, hour by hour.
Can I watch the eclipse with dark sunglasses?
No. Ordinary sunglasses, dark lenses, X-ray film, smoked glass or improvised materials do not protect you, and the DGS (Direção-Geral da Saúde, the health authority) repeats it before every eclipse. In 2027 the Sun will be high and strong in mid-morning, without even the false sense of safety that the 2026 sunset gave. Use only ISO 12312-2 certified glasses. Retinal damage is painless at the time and can show up hours or days later: if you notice blurred vision, dark spots or altered colours, call SNS 24 on 808 24 24 24.
Can I reuse my 2026 eclipse glasses?
Yes, if they are intact and certified. ISO 12312-2 glasses have no mandatory expiry date: what ruins them is scratches, pinholes, creases, film peeling off or broken arms. Check them against a bright lamp in a dark room: if you see anything but the filament, bin them. Also confirm that the «ISO 12312-2» marking is printed on the glasses themselves, not just on the packaging. If you did not keep yours, they reappear in pharmacies, opticians, astronomy shops and Ciência Viva centres as the date gets closer.
Will the sky be clear on 2 August 2027?
The odds are good, and better inland than on the coast. The August climatology compiled by Jay Anderson (Eclipsophile), the reference eclipse chasers plan on, gives about 88% of days with a visible Sun in Cádiz and about 74% at the southernmost sites by the Strait, where Atlantic marine cloud drifts in. Inland Andalusia, average August cloud drops below 15%. Two concrete warnings: the levante wind trails a banner of cloud off the Rock of Gibraltar, easy to dodge by moving south, and some years Saharan dust hazes over the whole sky.
What is the difference between the 2026 and the 2027 eclipse?
The two swap places. On 12 August 2026 totality crossed northern Spain and touched Portugal for 26 seconds at Montesinho, the deepest eclipse was in the North (99.9% in Bragança) and the Sun was almost setting. On 2 August 2027 totality crosses southern Spain, no part of Portugal is inside it, the deepest eclipse is in the Algarve (99.3% in Faro) and it happens mid-morning with the Sun high. In 2026 the problem was the horizon; in 2027 it is the distance to the path.
When is the next eclipse after 2 August 2027?
On 26 January 2028, and that one belongs to Portugal: an annular eclipse, the «ring of fire», with the path of annularity entering the south of the country in the late afternoon and then crossing half of Spain, through Seville and Córdoba. After that, Spain has no total solar eclipse until 2053, and totality does not return to Portuguese soil until 26 October 2144, in the Azores. In between there is also the total lunar eclipse of 31 December 2028, visible from Portugal on New Year’s Eve.
