How this works
Portuguese tolls have no single per-km price — each concession has its own table and they are summed section by section. But to get a quick sense of a trip's cost, you just multiply the motorway kilometres by the average per-km cost for your class. That's what this tool does: an honest estimate, with the €/km and the class multipliers visible and editable. The official figure always comes from the Infraestruturas de Portugal or Via Verde simulator.
- 1
Get your motorway km
In Google Maps or the IP simulator, check how many kilometres of the route are actually on tolled motorway. National roads and free stretches do not count.
- 2
Pick the class
Class 1 for ordinary cars and bikes. Move up if your vehicle is 1.1 m or taller at the first axle or has more axles (motorhomes, tall trailers, heavy vehicles).
- 3
Adjust the €/km if needed
The default is an average. If you know the price of a similar trip, divide it by the km and enter that number for an estimate closer to your route.
- 4
Confirm in the official simulator
For the exact figure to the cent, use the Infraestruturas de Portugal or Via Verde simulator — they add up the real price of each stretch from your origin to destination.
Frequently asked
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a rough estimate, not an official figure. Portuguese tolls have no fixed per-km price: each concession (Brisa, Ascendi, etc.) sets its own tariff and some stretches cost more than others. This tool uses an average per-km cost you can edit. For the exact figure to the cent, use the Infraestruturas de Portugal or Via Verde simulator, which add up section by section.
Where does the €0.085/km figure come from?
It is a reference value taken from a known trip: Lisbon-Porto on the A1 is about 303 km and, in 2026, costs around €25 in tolls for a Class 1 vehicle. That works out to roughly €0.083 per km. I rounded to €0.085 as an editable starting point. Other stretches sit above or below this.
What are classes 1 to 4?
The class sets how much you pay. Class 1: motorcycles and vehicles under 1.1 m tall (ordinary cars). Class 2: 2-axle vehicles 1.1 m or taller. Class 3: 3 axles 1.1 m or taller. Class 4: 4 or more axles 1.1 m or taller. Height is measured vertically at the first axle. A car towing a tall trailer can jump a class.
Are the class multipliers exact?
No. I use average multipliers on the Class 1 price (Class 2 ≈ 1.6×, Class 3 ≈ 2.5×, Class 4 ≈ 2.9×) only to give an order of magnitude. The real ratio varies between concessions and stretches. You can edit each multiplier in the tool. For trucks and heavy vehicles, always confirm in the official simulator.
Is Via Verde cheaper?
The tariff is generally the same, but there are discounts: motorcycles (Class 1) with Via Verde get 30% off on most motorways, and there are discounts for frequent users and electric vehicles on certain concessions. On gantry-only motorways (former SCUT), Via Verde avoids having to pay manually at terminals. This estimate applies no discounts — it is the list price.
DISCLAIMER
This is a rough estimate based on an average per-km cost, not an official figure. Tolls vary by concession, stretch, year and vehicle class, and this tool applies no discounts (Via Verde, frequency, electric vehicles). Do not use this number for invoicing, reimbursements or financial decisions. For the exact value, check the Infraestruturas de Portugal or Via Verde simulator. Not advice.
