How this works

The calculator follows Portaria 291/2017, as currently in force, and the IRN rules for online and automatic renewal published on 29 October 2026. Everything runs in your browser.

  1. 1
    Age sets the fee
The fee depends on the card’s validity: up to 5 years for people under 25 (€15) and 10 years from 25 (€18). Urgent, extremely urgent and applications abroad have their own table, always with the same pair of values by age.
  2. 2
The channel can give a discount
Renewing online or through automatic renewal, with normal delivery, costs 10% less: €16.20 in Portugal and €20.70 abroad. For an online replacement after loss or theft, the new card keeps the old one’s validity; if 5 years or less are left, you pay the lower fee with the discount (€13.50).
  3. 3
    Exemptions and free cases
A first card requested within the first year of life, with normal delivery, is free. People who prove economic insufficiency pay nothing for a normal request; with urgency, the exemption covers only the normal part and they pay the difference (for example, €33 − €18 = €15).

Cartão de Cidadão abroad

Portuguese consulates take card applications and renewals; from 25, online renewal sends the PIN letter to your address and the card to the consulate of your area. Extremely urgent and provisional cards only exist in Portugal.

Urgent at a consulate€45€48
Online renewal, collected at the consulate–€20.70
Online replacement, 5 years or less of validity–€18

Urgent abroad: at most 5 days in Europe and 7 elsewhere for the activation letter; the IRN says the delivery time depends on the destination country.

Who can renew online or automatically

  • Online (gov.pt): from 25, with the card valid or expired less than 30 days ago; you can change surname, address and contacts in the same request. Sign in with the Chave Móvel Digital or the card and a reader.
  • Automatic: Portuguese citizens over 25 living in Portugal who do not need to change any data. The PIN letter comes with a Multibanco reference; paying it renews the card, which is sent home by registered post at no extra cost.
  • At the counter: anyone, including under-25s, Brazilian citizens under the Porto Seguro treaty (in person only) and anyone who needs new fingerprints or photo. You can renew from 6 months before expiry.

The card address is the one the tax office, Segurança Social and the SNS use; if you are moving abroad, see leaving Portugal: what to sort out. For proof of a Portuguese address, see proof of address.

Civil registry certificates: birth, marriage and death

The same IRN counters issue civil registry certificates. The online certificate is requested on Civil Online, paid by Multibanco or credit card, and gives an access code valid for 6 months that replaces the paper version. Paper and international-model certificates are requested in person at a conservatória, Loja de Cidadão, IRN registry desk or consulate, or by post.

How much does it cost to renew the Cartão de Cidadão online?
€16.20 in Portugal and €20.70 abroad, 10% less than at the counter. Online renewal is for people aged 25 or more, with a card that is valid or expired less than 30 days ago, and is done on gov.pt with the Chave Móvel Digital or with the Cartão de Cidadão and a card reader. With urgency, the discount does not apply: €33.
I lost my Cartão de Cidadão. How much is a replacement?
First cancel the lost card. Then, if you are 25 or older and more than 60 days of validity are left, you can request a replacement online: it costs €13.50 if 5 years or less are left and €16.20 if more, and the new card keeps the old expiry date. At the counter you pay the normal fee for your age (€18 or €15).
How long does an urgent Cartão de Cidadão take?
With the urgent service (€33 or €30), the PIN letter that lets you collect the card arrives in 3 working days on the mainland, 4 in Madeira and on São Miguel, Terceira, Faial, Pico and Santa Maria, and 5 on Flores, Corvo, Graciosa and São Jorge. A normal request has no legal deadline; gov.pt gives an average of 8 working days on the mainland. The extremely urgent card (€53 or €50) is collected the same or next day in Lisbon or Porto. If the deadline is missed, you only pay the normal fee.
Who does not pay for the Cartão de Cidadão?
A baby’s first card, requested within a year of birth with normal delivery, is free; it can be requested at the maternity unit or with the online birth registration. People who prove economic insufficiency do not pay either, with a document from Segurança Social or the Junta de Freguesia, or a statement from the public assistance institution where they live.
Do I need to renew the card when I move house?
No. You only change the address, within 60 days: online it is free and at the counter it costs €3. The change is only complete once you confirm it with the letter you receive by post. The card address is the one used by the tax office, Segurança Social and the health service.
How much is a birth certificate?
The online certificate costs €10 and is requested on Civil Online, paid by Multibanco or credit card; the code is valid for 6 months. On paper it costs €10 for Segurança Social or child benefit and €20 for other purposes. The same amounts apply to marriage and death certificates.

DISCLAIMER
I checked the fees in November 2026 in the consolidated Portaria 291/2017 and on the IRN and gov.pt Cartão de Cidadão pages, updated on 29 October 2026. The official table sets no deadline for a normal request: for that case I show the averages published on gov.pt. The calculator leaves out the external service and changes of delivery place, which are in the table below. I do not handle card applications: confirm your case on justica.gov.pt or on the Cartão de Cidadão line (210 990 111).
