How this works

This tool maps the most common household items to the right bin, following the national rules of Sociedade Ponto Verde and the Portuguese Environment Agency. There is no calculation — just a checked list. Type what is in your hand, or browse by container colour. The basic rule is simple: empty the packaging (no need to wash it) and cut down the volume. Where an item could go two ways, the note gives the alternative.

    Type the name — "bottle", "batteries", "capsule". The list filters as you type and understands both Portuguese and English terms.

    Each item shows the right container plus a tip: empty it, squash it, remove the lid, or what to do when it is dirty.

    The golden rule
    Only packaging goes in the yellow bin. Empty it — no need to wash, it saves water — and squash it flat. When an item could go two ways, use the note.

    The three ecopontos are national, but organic waste (a brown bin or door-to-door), ecocentros and some collections vary from one council to another.

Frequently asked

Do I need to wash packaging before recycling?
No. Sociedade Ponto Verde is clear: just empty and drain the packaging. Do not waste water washing it — the recycling process cleans it. Only when something is heavily soaked in grease (like very greasy foil) should it go to general waste.
Where does the pizza box go?
It depends on its state. The lid and any clean cardboard go in the blue bin. The greasy base with food residue cannot be recycled — it goes in general waste. If you can separate the two, do it.
Do coffee capsules go in the yellow bin?
No. Even aluminium ones, coffee capsules should not go in the yellow bin. Many brands run their own take-back points (in stores or by post); if you do not use that route, the capsule goes in general waste.
Do drinking glasses, mirrors and bulbs go in the green glass bin?
No. The green bin is only for packaging glass — bottles and jars. Drinking glasses, mirrors, ceramics and Pyrex have a different composition and spoil the batch; they go to the ecocentro or general waste. Bulbs go to Electrão (WEEE) points.
Where do medicines, batteries and used oil go?
Each has its own route: expired medicines and drug packaging go to the pharmacy (VALORMED); batteries go in the pilhão; used cooking oil, in a sealed bottle, goes in the oleão — never down the drain.
