How this works
In Portugal, a monthly salary offer only makes sense when you know whether it is paid over 12 or 14 payments. The most common employee structure is 14 payments: 12 monthly salaries, plus the holiday allowance and the Christmas allowance. This converter puts everything on the same footing: annual gross, normal monthly payment, 12-month equivalent and a Segurança Social line before IRS.

Choose the direction
If you have a monthly offer, convert it to annual gross. If the company quotes an annual package, convert it to the normal monthly payment over 14 or 12 payments.
- 2
Choose 14 or 12 payments
Over 14 payments, the annual total is 12 monthly salaries plus the holiday and Christmas allowances. Over 12, the same total is spread across every month, usually through duodécimos or an annual contract structure.

Read gross, monthly equivalent and SS
The calculator shows annual gross, the normal payment, the 12-month equivalent and an estimate after the 11% Segurança Social employee share, before IRS.
Frequently asked
Why do people in Portugal talk about 14 months?
Because, besides the 12 monthly salaries, employees are entitled to the subsídio de férias (holiday allowance) and the subsídio de Natal (Christmas allowance). In practice, that gives the equivalent of 14 payments when salary is quoted monthly. The Christmas allowance is set in article 263 of the Código do Trabalho; the holiday allowance is in article 264.
Is a €2,000 offer over 14 months the same as €2,000 over 12?
No. €2,000 over 14 months is €28,000 gross per year. €2,000 over 12 months is €24,000. To compare fairly, always look at annual gross or at the 12-month monthly equivalent.
If I receive duodécimos, do I lose the allowances?
No. Duodécimos only change payment timing: part or all of the allowances is paid every month instead of arriving as larger holiday and Christmas payments. The annual gross total should match the agreed structure.
Does this calculate net salary?
No. This tool converts monthly gross and annual gross. It only shows a line with the standard 11% Segurança Social employee share, before IRS. For net pay, use the net salary calculator, because IRS depends on household, dependants, withholding and benefits.
Should I negotiate monthly or annual salary?
For comparing offers, annual is cleaner. In Portugal, two offers with the same monthly figure can have different totals if one is quoted over 12 payments and the other over 14. Always ask for annual gross and confirm whether meal allowance, bonuses and duodécimos are inside or outside that number.
DISCLAIMER
An informational tool for comparing gross figures. It assumes the general employee rule in mainland Portugal: 14 payments when a monthly salary includes holiday and Christmas allowances, or 12 payments when the annual total is spread evenly. It does not calculate IRS, withholding, meal allowance, bonuses, collective agreements or special cases. Always check the contract and payslip.
