How this works
A part-time contract is not an arbitrary salary: the Labour Code compares it with a full-time worker in an equivalent situation and applies the normal weekly-hours ratio. This calculator turns that rule into a readable offer check: part-time base salary, annual gross, 12-month equivalent, standard Social Security deduction and a separate meal-allowance estimate.
- 1
Compare weekly hours
The law defines part-time work as a normal weekly period below that of a comparable full-time worker. The tool calculates the ratio between part-time weekly hours and full-time weekly hours.
- 2
Apply the ratio to salary
Article 154 of the Labour Code gives a part-time worker pay and benefits in proportion to their normal weekly working period, unless a more favourable rule applies. So a 20-hour schedule against a 40-hour standard uses 50%.
- 3
Check the proportional minimum
In 2026, the national minimum monthly wage is €920. The page compares the part-time base salary with €920 multiplied by the same working-time ratio, to flag offers below the proportional minimum.
- 4
Separate meal allowance and contributions
Meal allowance is estimated separately: the full daily amount if the average day is at least 5 hours, or proportional when it is shorter. The 11% Social Security share is shown on base salary, before IRS.
Frequently asked
How do you calculate part-time salary in Portugal?
The practical rule is to multiply the salary of a comparable full-time worker by the weekly-hours ratio. Example: 20h/40h = 50%; a €1,200 full-time salary gives a €600 part-time monthly base, before IRS and Social Security.
Can a part-time worker earn below the minimum wage?
They can receive less than €920 per month if the working schedule is also shorter, but it should not fall below the proportional minimum. In 2026, 20h against a 40h standard gives a proportional minimum of €460 per month.
Is meal allowance always proportional?
No. Article 154 refers to the collective-agreement amount or, if more favourable, the company practice. Only when the normal daily period is under five hours is the meal allowance calculated in proportion to the weekly normal period.
Does this calculate net salary?
No. It shows the proportional gross base and the standard 11% Social Security share. IRS depends on household status, dependants, withholding, benefits and any taxable part of the meal allowance.
What if the collective agreement or company policy is more favourable?
Use the rule that is more favourable to the worker. This tool calculates the general legal rule for comparison, but collective agreements, internal policies, supplements or special schedules can improve the amount.
